Prospect Watch: Despite having 10 hits, the Chihuahuas managed to score just twice in a loss to Round Rock. … Jason Heyward joined the club on a rehab appearance, batting cleanup and starting at designated hitter. He went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. … A night after his five-game hitting streak came to an end, left fielder Trenton Brooks started a new one with a pair of singles. Brooks, 29, has already hit five homers this month, after hitting four in May. The former Granite Hills slugger made just his seventh start in left field – a rather interesting development considering the Padres’ lack of production in left. Overall, he ranks second in the league with a 1.001 OPS. … Veteran infielder Mike Brosseau had a pair of hits, including a double. The former Ray and Brewer has appeared in parts of five big league seasons, most recently in 2023. However, he has struggled mightily with the Chihuahuas. In 50 games, the 31-year-old is hitting .227/.292/.378. … Jackson Wolf struggled through 3.1 innings of work. The 26-year-old allowed five runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out three. Despite the difficulties in this one, the left-handed hurler has fared better in his second stint in the PCL. After posting a poor 7.08 ERA with El Paso last season, the 2021 draftee sports a 4.68 ERA in seven starts with the Chihuahuas this season. … Bryan Hoeing, whose rehab assignment was officially extended because of a week-long interruption at the start of the month, had a strong outing, working a scoreless 1.2 innings. He allowed one hit, walked a batter, and punched out a pair of batters. Hoeing threw 21 pitches, 12 for strikes, as he worked past one inning for the second time in nine appearances.

Prospect Watch: The Missions played a wild, back-and-forth game in Amarillo, taking the lead for good in the seventh, and winning at Hodgetown. … The Missions hit two home runs, both from unlikely sources. Kai Murphy and Ripken Reyes each collected their first homer of the season. Murphy, a former undrafted free agent from Arizona State, gave the organization solid offensive contributions in each of the last two seasons, but the 24-year-old has struggled in his first crack at Double-A. In 50 games for the Missions, Murphy carries a .614 OPS. … Reyes, 28, has been in the organization since being selected in the 30th round out of USD in 2019. The versatile utilityman has covered both El Paso and San Antonio this year, providing positional flexibility. Between the two stops,  Reyes has a .710 OPS. … Brandon Valenzuela started at designated hitter and had a pair of hits, including a triple. He also drew a walk. The switch-hitting 24-year-old had a monster May and has followed that up with a solid June thus far. In 11 games this month, he’s walked nine times while only striking out eight times. Overall, the Hermosillo native is hitting .292/.352/.492 this month. … Righty Victor Lizarraga left his start after 1.1 innings with an apparent injury. After a flyout, trainer Juan Peña and pitching coach Jeff Andrews came out to the mound. Lizarraga threw a few pitches under their supervision before leaving the game. He allowed a run on a hit before being pulled … Righty Manuel Castro pitched a scoreless ninth, notching his ninth save of the year. Castro has largely dominated this season, but a few poor outings have skewed his stats. In 22.2 innings, Castro has struck out 35 batters while holding opposing hitters to a .200 average.

TinCaps rained out

Visalia Rawhide 7, Storm 1

Prospect Watch: The Rawhide plated four runs in the fifth inning and cruised to a win against the Storm at The Diamond. … The Storm only had seven hits, and Victor Figueroa had four of them. The slugging first baseman had a pair of doubles and two singles. Figueroa has been arguably the biggest surprise in the system after being drafted out of junior college in Florida on day three last season. After putting up absurd numbers for a few weeks in the ACL, the 21-year-old is merely producing impressive numbers in Lake Elsinore. Friday’s big night raised his overall slash-line to .275/.398/.522 with Lake Elsinore. … Righty Kleiber Olmedo helding Visalia in check through the first four innings, racking up grounders and striking out three. Then he cam back out for the fifth and walked the first two batters before giving way. Both runs came around to score after his departure. The 20-year-old righty has mostly struggled this season working out of the Storm rotation. Friday’s outing raised his ERA to 7.56. … Lefty Igor Gil delivered 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a pair of batters. The 24-year-old signed with the Padres as an international free agent at the end of 2023. The 5-foot-11 southpaw has thrown very well for the Storm this season out of the bullpen. In 13 outings, Gil has posted a 2.00 ERA across 27 innings. He’s struck out 32 while holding opposing batters to a .200 average.

ACL Padres 4, ACL Reds 1 (7 innings)

Key Statistics: LF Gustavo Marquez, 2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI; DH Luis De Leon, 1-for-3; 2B Ismael Javier, 1-for-2, 2 R; RHP J.B. Wendelken, IP, K; RHP Tanner Smith, 2 IP, H, R, 2 K; RHP Luis Maracara (W, 2-2) 3 IP, 2 BB, 4 K; RHP Dariel Polanco (S, 1), IP, K

Prospect Watch: The ACL pitching staff combined to toss a one-hitter against the Reds. … At the plate, left fielder Gustavo Marquez did the heavy lifting with a single, a double, and three RBI. The 20-year-old, part of the Padres’ 2023 international signing class, spent the last two years in the DSL before making his stateside debut this season. He has a .491 OPS in 22 ACL games. … J.B Wendlken pitched a scoreless inning in his second rehab outing in the desert. The big righty, who signed as a minor league free agent over the winter and got an invitation to spring training, will look to join a full-season affiliate quickly. … Righty Luis Maracara earned his second win with arguably his best outing of the season. The 17-year-old came out of the bullpen and fired three shutout innings without allowing a hit. He walked two and struck out four. The youngest pitcher in the ACL has struggled in the desert but he’s struck out 27 batters in 20 innings in his stateside debut.
